“The Veldt”
Ray Bradbury

After reading the short story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury I thought that it was very similar to the movie “Smart House.” This movie is similar to the short story because in both plots, there is a marvelous, technological house that was intended to assist families, but in the end it just results in mayhem. In both plots, the house ends up taking control because in The Veldt, they end up not being able to shut off the room with the lions. Something similar also happens in the Smart House. The climax of the movie is when the house entraps its owners because it feels that the outside world is too dangerous so it doesn’t let the family out. So they can’t shut off the house until the end. Even in The Veldt, the kids finally control it in the end and they are able to turn off the lions even though their parents weren’t able to do so. In The Veldt there are parts where they feel that the house was a very good investment because it takes a lot of responsibility off their hands. For example, in The Veldt, Lydia doesn’t have to do a lot of things for her children, like giving them a bath, cooking food for them or just being a good mother in general. The same sort of thing happens in the movie because the house soon replace the mother by being a much more efficient mother and caregiver. This is how both stories are very similar.
